If Arsenal move for Michu this winter, it could be a more significant signing than Mesut Ozil.
Michu will square up against Arsenal tomorrow as Swansea’s primary attacking threat and Arsene Wenger has reiterated his admiration for the Spanish striker, who the Gunners were linked with strongly over the summer.
Plenty of people have wanted to be compared to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp in their careers and Wenger’s comparison between Michu and the Dutchman just confirms how good a player the Swansea front man is.
“I see him like a little bit, position-wise, like a Bergkamp, more than an up-front striker. They can play with both [strikers] because Michu’s the kind of striker who is a midfielder as well. He can play both positions,” said Wenger.
Arsenal need a striker as not just back up to Olivier Giroud, but someone who can compete with Giroud for a place in the first team on a consistent basis.
There’s no reason Michu can’t be that man this winter and if the Gunnersmanage to get him, then their chances of winning the Premier League title will be better for having him in the side.
Michu has proven to be productive in different systems which means Wenger would be able to use him in multiple ways.
The Gunners predominantly play with one sole striker and base the rest of the attack around him. That’s a system which saw Michu score 18 goals in his first Premier League season.
If Wenger wanted to play him alongside Giroud or any other player in attack, his ratio of two goals in five games so far this season suggests he could do that job because he’s been playing alongside Wilfried Bony.
In terms of the way Arsenal predominantly play their football, Michu is already very used to their style of play because Swansea play in a similar way.
He’s completing 80% of his passes this season, turning over possession just 0.6 times per game on average, he’s come up with two assists in all competitions for Swansea so far this season and is having just under four efforts on goal per game.
As an attacking player and striker, he’s close to the complete package.
The cost of getting Michu to the Emirates Stadium won’t be a problem for the Gunners because they have cash to draw on despite a recent dent in profits.
Michael Laudrup valued the player at around the £30 million mark which is significantly less than the club would have to pay for Karim Benzema from Real Madrid and if Arsenal have their business hats on, they may go with the Premier League man.
Michu has the potential and ability to score a lot of goals in any of Europe’s big sides and there’s no reason that can’t be Arsenal.
Who would you prefer, Michu or Benzema?
